CAREER

Most of my career has been involved in the Health Industry. I originally trained as a Nurse / Midwife prior to moving into the  Addiction field. I was Assistant Manager of a residential drug project for 5 years.Picture of Mairi Gillies

To build on my interest in Mental health, I was fortunate to gain employment in the Priory Hospital Glasgow where I worked for 12 years as senior Counsellor providing both Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Person-Centred Therapy to individuals experiencing anxiety, stress, depression and emotional and psychological difficulties.

I am also trained in EMDR – an effective therapy in the treatment of Post- traumatic stress disorder - and have treated personnel following the Lockerbie disaster, MOD recruits returning from wars, survivors of the Stockline and Clutha Bar disasters and childhood abuse cases.

I provided the Therapy service to Central Police / Police Scotland for 11 years and Central and Fife Fire services prior to its amalgamation to Scottish Fire and Rescue service.

I am an Accredited Member with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapists.

VALUES

I am keen to offer my wide range of experiences and skills to individuals who are experiencing primarily mood and stress problems.  My overall view is that people are worth investing in – no matter what the problem or how long the duration - and that counselling can stem the flow of a situation spiralling out of control. It can improve quality of life and mind in a pro-active and productive manner. It can also minimise the potential of accessing mal-adaptive coping strategies which are likely to maintain but not successfully manage the problem.  My aim is to continue to provide a high quality effective service that is of benefit to its users, and an overall worthwhile experience.
